In 2009 Jamie Jackway had a tragic accident whilst working as a Paramedic rendering him a quadriplegic. As Ambassador to QAS Legacy, Jamie's story brought a number of like minded people together to help raise fundds to support him and his family. From walking the Kokoda Trail, golf days and triathlons if you thought of it we did it for the cause.
One of these fundraising events was the inaugural Brisbane to Townsville 1600 kilometer bike ride. Every Ambulance Station we stopped at along the way (and there were many!!) the words were the same:
"We need to look after our Paramedics"
The tremendous support and kindness we received from the many LAC's was ovrwhelming and showed true generosity of spirit and community support. Given that we had a bit of time to think whilst riding those 1600 kilometers the idea of QAS Legacy was born.
Our Charity has a sole purpose to support the families of Paramedics and Communication Officers in times of need. When we told Jamie that QAS Legacy is up and running his first words were:
"Excellent and about time"
